Junior footballers of Marian Academy will don brand-new uniforms sponsored by Bounty Farm Limited when they participate in the upcoming Under-11 competition organised by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
Managing Director of Bounty Farm, Patrick DeGroot, on Thursday last, handed over the complete set of playing gear to the school’s principal, Sister Marie Harper, during the primary department’s assembly in the school’s auditorium.
The gear consists of jerseys which bear the logo of the school and the sponsor, trunks, hoses and bibs. Former National footballer Michael Layne sewed the jerseys, trunks and bibs, and supplied the hoses as part of the package.
DeGroot told the students that the company was very happy to donate the gear and urged them to get involved in sport. The principal thanked the company for the kind gesture which she said would be a stimulus for the players to do well.
Member of the Organising Committee, Isaiah Chappelle, who spearheaded the venture, gave an overview of the formation of the club. He related that during the last term of the previous school year, a group of boys interested in the game, were assembled to participate in a GFA Under-11 league competition.
Despite not winning a game, the boys displayed great enthusiasm and some parents volunteered to assist the school in having the boys develop their skills.
The services of certified coach of the Guyana Football Federation, Paul James, was secured and he held training sessions with them every Thursday and Friday afternoon, with a friendly match staged every other weekend.
The GFA invited the team for the last Under-11 knockout competition which was completed earlier this year and they placed third.
Former national player and coach Gordon Braithwaite is the present instructor, taking over when James was unavailable at the start of the year.
