Sophia Sparkle Youth Group last weekend received a quantity of sports equipment from Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, Steve Ninvalle following a pledge made by him to throw his full support behind the efforts being made by the entity.
Founder of the club, Mrs. Doris Shelto-McLennon, disclosed that Ninvalle visited the club, which is located at Lot 952 Pattensen, Turkeyen Housing Scheme (‘B’ Field Sophia) last Sunday and presented cricket gear, football and basketballs. The equipment was collected by Organising Officer of the club, Delron McLennon.
Mrs. McLennon expressed optimism of this being the start of a positive and fruitful relationship. It was revealed that Ninvalle promised to provide a scholarship to a private institution for one of the youngsters there. She indicated that the club will officially be launched on April 5 from 1:00pm and not on the March date previously stated.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur sought a comment from PS Ninvalle who shed light on his involvement with the club.
He disclosed that following a request made to him he wanted to have a first hand look at the operations of the club and was very pleased with what he saw. He promised to give whatever assistance within his power to help the youths there.
Ninvalle noted that investing in those and any other youths in Guyana was an investment for the future and he was only happy to do so. He indicated that he will make efforts to secure a scholarship at a private school for one youngster who has been doing well in school and is able to pass the entrance exam to the school. The ministry official said this was part of a holistic approach at helping the club and moreso the youngsters develop.
He pledged to donate several scrabble sets after learning that many of the youths there are very inclined to playing and even learning the word game. Ninvalle is due to revisit the Sophia club on March 1.
He noted that without the help and blessings of Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sport Neil Kumar, he would not have been able to do some of the things he is doing at the club. He noted that both men were instrumental in securing the gear presented, with Kumar providing some. They have also pledged their continued support in assisting the club.
Ninvalle promised to work closely with the Sparkle Youth Club for the good of the youngsters involved. While there he was treated to several items on a small programme arranged.
One official of the club has thrown out the challenge and is requesting for other government officials and mainly the business community to come forward and provide scholarship for some of the children there who are in need of such assistance and have the aptitude of going places once given the opportunity.
The club boosts a membership of over 90 youths and is headed by Matthew McLennon, who is the Chairman. They have had support and help from Justice Desmond Burch-Smith, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud and Opposition Leader Robert Corbin among others.
Justice Bruch-Smith spends time every weekend helping youths with education aspects along with pep talks on the hazards surrounding crime and other social ills. Mr Corbin has been providing educational material, while Minister Persaud has been extremely supportive in their agriculture drive.
