Kaieteur Sports – Action intensified during yesterday’s round of the GCB Inter-County U-19 50-Overs competition, with commanding wins for the Essequibians as well as the lads from Berbice.
At Lusignan Ground, Essequibo batting first paid off for the GCB XI bowlers who ensured that apart from Romario Bholo (23) and Jathniel Nurse (20), no other batsman looked threatening during their innings which ended on 142-10 in the 36th over.
The spinfest led by Joshua Budhram (4-29), Michael Newland 2-29 and the in-form Gibran Yacoob (2-42), were exceptional alongside seamer Roupie Ramraj (2-23).
GCB XI in reply failed to get to their required target despite opener Yannick Newton hammering 11 fours in his 31-ball 47, eventually crumbling for 134-10 in 36 overs.
After his dismissal, not much came from the GCB XI batting order thanks to exceptional bowling from seamer Darwin Joseph (3-29) and off-spinner Shazim Mohamed (4-18), who pulled the game back in favor of Essequibo.
In a tense showdown over at Police Ground, the city boys collapsed for 121-10 after 38 overs after Berbice spin twins in match MVP, left-arm spinner Gilbert Griffith (4-17) who continued his amazing form, alongside right-arm leggy Feaz Baksh (3-13), locked down the batting order.
Only Dhanesh Persaud (29), West Indies U19 player Shamar Apple (16) and Parmehwar Ram (21) got out the blocks.
Opener Ramzan Koobir (62*) piloted the chase expertly, hitting (8×4 3×6) as part of his match-winning half-century, which took Berbice to 122-3 in 22.2 overs.
Middle-order batsmen Adrian Hetmyer (22) and Romario Ramdehol (11)* played their finishing roles well to help see their team to victory.
For Demerara, a wicket apiece from skipper Dave Mohabir (1-7) Ravaldo Pereira (1-16) and all-rounder Emmanuel Lewis (1-26) failed to prevent their opponents from getting home.
Action continues this weekend. (Clifton Ross)
