Kaieteur Sports – The quarter-final line up is all but complete as action in the inaugural MCYS/East Bank Inter Village Football Tournament, organized by Sports Extra heats up at the Eccles EE Ground.
The final two quarter final spots will be on the line tonight, Saturday evening, when the final two matches in the round-robin stage are contested.
Grove and Upper Soesdyke which have already qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament will face off in the final game from 20:00hrs with the opening shindig at 18:00hrs featuring Timehri and Friendship.
Friendship are at the summit in Group D having won their opening game against Kaneville who had defeated Timehri in their opening encounter. Timehri must win and do so handsomely if they are to deny Kaneville from advancing. An exciting double header awaits.
On the penultimate night of group-stage play, Kuru Kururu continued their dominance of Group A by winning outright with another victory, coming from behind to defeat Mocha 2-1. The Soesdyke Linden Highway based wide had defeated Agricola in the tournament’s opening game, 3-1.
Finding themselves in a must win situation, Mocha, regarded as one of the best sides on the East Bank, cantered into the lead on 20 minutes thanks to Kelvin Gordon who was the only player to score for his side, also netting their lone goal against Agricola.
Mocha’s emboldened feeling was dashed seven minutes later when Kuru Kururu’s Kevin Scott drew them level, it was also his second goal of the tournament. A draw would have been good enough for Kuru Kururu to advance but their veteran talisman, former national player, Marvin ‘Munro’ Joseph once again sealed the deal for his village like he did in the win against Agricola.
This time around he blasted in a well-directed half volley off the right upright from about 30 yards out in the 60th minute to ensure that his village maintained their unbeaten run and with confidence high, sealed their berth in the quarter-finals set to commence on Tuesday.
Thursday night’s opening game ended in a draw, the first for the tournament, Swan , one of the fittest looking villages clawing their way back from trailing Lower Soesdyke to earn an equal share of the points which was enough to see them winning the group and advancing along with Herstelling.
Lower Soesdyke, which lost to Herstelling 0-2, eased into the lead in the 27th minute through a goal from Tyrone Burnette. It seemed as if they were going to defend that advantage, but Swan left their neutralizing act for late in the contest.
Their leading marksman, Abraham Webb who sat out the entire first half was finally introduced in the second and that was all the inspiration they needed. With three minutes left until the final whistle, Webb spun some webs around the Lower Soesdyke defense line and rocked the nets with the equalizing goal, his third of the tournament.
He is now the joint leading goal scorer with Domini Garnett of Grove. The quarter finals, which is the commencement of the knockout stage will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday at the same venue.
Kuru Kururu is set to tackle Upper Soesdyke, Swan will come up against Agricola in what is anticipated to be a huge battle Grove will match skills with the runner-up of group D while Herstelling will take on the winner of group D.
Tournament orgainser, Sports Extra is expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Housing, National Sports Commission, Bounty Farm Ltd., Fitness Express, Star Rentals, Trophy Stall, NAMILCO and Republic Bank for their partnership which has made the tournament a success so far.
