(Kaieteur News) – Eighty-four persons living with disabilities from Regions Five and Six graduated from a technical skills programme they attended over a six-month period.
The graduands were awarded at a simple ceremony held at the Center for Equity, Opportunity and Innovation at Palmyra in Region Six, which was commissioned nearly a year ago.
Several courses offered include Arts and Painting, Craft Production, Garment Construction and Textiles, Web Services and Small Electronic Repairs, and Commercial Food Preparation and Pastry Making.
First Lady Arya Ali, whose office is one of the collaborators of the training said, “Inclusion isn’t a privilege in Guyana, it is a right. Inclusion is where potential is nurtured and cultivated, and dreams are given a chance to develop, thrive and truly materialize…this isn’t just another graduation ceremony. It is a milestone that open doors to independence and restore dignity, doors that lead to personal and professional growth that allows you to contribute meaningfully to our beloved country,” Mrs. Ali emphasized in her main address.

The First Lady affirmed that the graduands will now be able to thrive in Guyana’s advancing economy. The graduands will now be better able to tap into existing opportunities in the tourism, agriculture and technology sectors.
“For many of you, this also presents an opportunity for you to start your own small businesses, which can be further supported by agencies like the Small Business Bureau, and the soon to be launched Small Business Development Bank that will offer interest-free loans to micro and small enterprises,” she noted.
The First Lady said that similar training programmes align with President Irfaan Ali’s aim to upskill and inject 5,000 persons with disability into the local workforce.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) Richard Maughn, encouraged the graduands to “move with confidence,” as they commence their professional journey.
“What matters is that you started a course of study, and you have completed it, and for that we are proud of you, and we want to let you know that we believe that you can move forward,” the CEO assured.

Ganesh Singh, Chairman of the National Commission on Disability (NCD), explained that the certificates are nationally and internationally recognized, as they have been issued from the BIT, a statutory agency.
Also attending Friday’s event were Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six, Narindra Persaud, Regional Vice-Chair Wajid Khan, and Deputy REO Mary Samaroo, all of whom assisted in handing over certificates.
The other partnering agencies are the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) of the Ministry of Labor and Manpower Planning, and the Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities.
