Kaieteur Sports – As Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations draw closer, the push for fitness and healthier lifestyles continues to gather pace, led by former national athlete Kelvin Johnson.
Since returning to Guyana, Johnson has been actively engaging communities through a series of fitness outreaches, particularly in Plaisance and Sophia. Both initiatives attracted impressive turnouts, especially among young people, reflecting strong community support for his efforts to promote wellness and positive life choices.
“Both outreaches witnessed large turnouts,” Johnson noted, acknowledging the growing interest among youth despite the significant costs associated with hosting such programmes. He emphasized that the initiative remains firmly committed to youth development and fostering a culture of fitness.
The outreach programmes go beyond physical activity, incorporating educational sessions, career guidance discussions, and exposure to sports and trade skills. These holistic engagements are designed to equip participants with practical tools for personal growth and development.
Building on this momentum, Johnson, in collaboration with Guyana EX-Athletes and Friends Inc., is set to host the 10th Annual Independence One-Mile, 5K and 10K Road Race on May 14. The event will commence at Eve Leary Ground.
The one-mile race, targeting children in the Under-9 and Under-12 categories, is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Adult participants will take to the road later in the day, with the 5K and 10K races starting at 4:00 p.m.
Participants can look forward to a range of incentives, including cash prizes, backpacks, water bottles, and medals for all competitors. Additionally, exciting giveaways such as tablets, televisions, and bicycles will be up for grabs for lucky participants.
Adding a competitive twist to the day’s proceedings, organisers have also included a Stanley versus Burgette 5K road race as the event’s finale.
The initiative has garnered support from several key stakeholders, including Burgette Williams Forde, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, and the Athletic Association of Guyana.
With strong community backing and a clear focus on youth engagement, the upcoming road race is expected to be a highlight of the country’s independence celebrations while reinforcing the importance of health and active living.
