Jonathan Foo returned from the regional under-19 cricket series in Barbados to the familiar surroundings of his home ground Albion and was at his consummate best smashing six fours and a six in an entertaining 79 to spur Albion to 62-run win against Rose Hall Community Centre on Saturday in one semi-final of the Tenelec 50-over Cricket competition in Berbice.
Young Warriors whipped Scotsburg by 38 runs in Saturday’s other semi-final and will meet Albion on August 24 at Albion in the final.
The talented 17-year-old Foo, who has struggled mentally to demonstrate the ‘big day temperament’ in his five years of representing Guyana at the regional level and has just a single half-century for his country, showed why he is regarded as one of the most naturally talented teenage stroke players in the Caribbean with an array of stunning shots as Albion reached 194-9 in an encounter reduced to 40 overs due to morning rain.
The hosts then restricted Rose Hall Community Centre to 132-9 when their 40 overs expired.
Foo, who has another year at the national youth level, dominated a 48-run third wicket partnership with West Indies Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine who made 18 as the left-hander returned to local action following his return from the USA where he was recuperating from a back injury.
Foo added another 32 for the fifth wicket with Ranga Lachigadu (17) before West Indies under-19 left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul made 24 towards the end of the innings.
Medium pacer Kawal Mangal (2-29), off-spinner Rumesh Munna (2-30) and left-arm spinner Sean Jhetto (2-42) were the best bowlers for the visitors who were given a solid 66-run start in 15 overs from Sanjay Khan (44) and Daryl Narine (20).
Once the partnership was broken 17-year-old off-spinner Hemant Rabindrabat (4-15), First-class leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (2-14) and off-spinner Deonarine (2-16) took control for Albion.
Over at Scotsburg on the Upper Corentyne in another rain-hit match, Young Warriors, were dismissed for 148 in 34.3 of 35 overs before Scotsburg fell for 110 in 31 overs with openers Anthony Bramble (21) and Peter Grimes (20) being the only batsmen to offer fight as medium pacer Paul Wintz had 3-10 and got support from off-spinners Gajanand Singh, 2-15 and Hussain 2-17.
Imran Hussain hit six fours and two sixes in his half-century and along with Waheid Edwards (26) added 73 for the second-wicket for Young Warriors in 13 overs as off-spinners James Hart and Alex Amsterdam captured two wickets each.
