G/town, Linden seniors square-off
Whenever any sporting team from Linden invade Georgetown you can rest assure that the rivalry between the two will be intense with no quarters given by either and that is what is forecasted for their Inter-Sub Association match-up this evening, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The tournament which is being organised by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will see Georgetown take on Berbice in an Under-20 clash to complete the double-header as the entity strives to resuscitate the sport which has suffered from negative publicity over the past months.
The G/ town team got off to a solid start in the competition with a crushing win against Berbice in a match they dominated throughout, while Linden was to play Berbice last evening in Linden.
Steffon Gillis, who had the hot hand against Berbice in the opening encounter, will once again be expected to lead their charge, while point guard Darcel Harris will need to improve to match the output of Steve Neils, a speedy guard who loves to make penetrations in the paint.
Harris will have as his support Ryan Stephney and Naylon Loncke, while Linden’s back-up guards will come from Neil Simon, Marvin Hartman, who can also play at the forward position with the same potency and Mark Louis.
The power forwards could prove interesting with the likes of Royston Siland, Fabian Johnson, Drumson McAulay and Rudy James matching up against Kurleigh Austin, Gavin Wilson, Mark Richards and Louis James.
Linden hold the distinct advantage in the centre which is dominated by Nkosi Gurrick, Terrence James, Jason Alonzo, Dwayne Roberts and Omaly Sampson, while the visitors attempt to combat them will be led by Ryan Gullen and Kurt Elias.
Because of Linden’s imposing presence in the paint, G/town might have to use the agility of Siland and Johnson to thwart the offensive threat of the opposition.
However, G/town’s Head Coach Lugard Mohan is one of the more respected and knowledgeable coaches around and even though his team seems inferior in size it is anticipated that he will conjure up some plan to make them competitive at home.
As always, the local support could prove decisive, but is usually not a major factor whenever the two teams meet.
Expect the Lindeners to be extremely competitive as they would want to make a statement in G/town’s backyard.
The other game should see G/town making it two wins in row after their impressive showing against Linden in their first match where they triumphed by over 30 points.
Fans are urged to come out and witness if it will be redemption or defeat for the Mining Town.
Jump ball time is 19:30 hrs.
