Dear Sports Editor,
Major General, Retired, Norman N.G. McLean was a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Chief and founder leader of Guyana National Service and also served as Secretary and President Guyana Cricket Board of Control, is one of the nation’s heroes, who has come a long way, driven by ushakable belief through buliding Guyana’s destiny, through his outstanding leadership qualities.
Immediately after he was assigned the Chief of staff of the Guyana Defence Force in 1988 by then President, LFS Burnham, was a shocking news to all troops who were in the GDF, which brought some amount of divison among senior officers, but he stood his ground and through his leadership qualities, changed the way the army was heading. Those things he did marked the beginning of his commitment as an astute leader whose life mirrored the rise of the GDF in every aspect in the field of Soldieting, Sports, and culture. To me he was the army best C.O.S with any doubt. His leadership style was very effective because he was quick to learn and adopt the right principle.
He was well matured, driven by being a police officer and a soldier, a stateman, a strategist and propelled by an unshakable Leader in L.F.S.B. who recognized qualites of a great leader in Norman McLean at the time when things was falling apart in the militaries.
Throughout Norman McLean’s leadership, he embodied the values of G.D.F. discipline, duty devotion and respect and most important, love of the Highest level.
These credentials reflected more than his academic accomplishment, they shaped him into a capable leader. His service to the Guyana Cricket Board and the public sector reflected the same integrity and the structure that defined his military years. He is a man beyond the uniforms he wore serving this wonderful Nation; a true Guyanese patriot.
He will be always remembered, especially when we discuss the people who bring about changes in our society and the country at large. Through the years, Mr Mclean has been actively involved in various organizations, was President of the Guyana Cricket Board of Control and also managed the West Indies Cricket on two occasions. Over the years he played for Police Sport Club, in the Case Cup division one cricket with fair success. He was a nationally recognised leader, managing projects and professional and civic organizations.
He established a strong reputation for building bridges, mending relationships and developing high performing organizations.
He was a person of unquestionable character, high integrity, and an excellent communicator and always brought the highest level of leadership competence, credibility, trust, respectability and transparency and lauded for excellent communications skills, evidenced by high demand for speaking engagements.
During his time as president of Guyana Cricket Board, his devotion to the development of youth Cricket was unparalleled. He lead the transformation of cricket during the 1980 to 1992.
As testimony to his standing in the Cricket Community, he was frequently a keynote speaker at several Cricket events.
He made meritorious and generous contributions to the sustained growth of cricket in Guyana and the Caribbean. I personally served with him and there’s so much great reflection of His diversity and style, helping others to accomplish their various goals and achievements in various fields. In today society we need leaders like him to do what is necessary to bring greatness to our society and country.
Victor Benjamin.
