(Kaieteur News) – In a clear intent to own up to his action, an Upper Berbice River murder accused on Tuesday pled guilty before Justice Simone Morris at the Berbice High Court.
Maxton Walker, 30, a tractor operator, was indicted for the offence of murder contrary to common law.
It is alleged that on March 18, 2024, in Berbice, he murdered 36-year-old Marcus Adrian.
Investigations revealed that Walker and Adrian were friends, both of whom resided in the community of Hururu Mission, Upper Berbice River. The deceased was a logger who frequently collaborated with Walker.
Police had confirmed the two friends were consuming alcohol on March 18, 2024 and both became intoxicated. Shortly after, an argument ensued between them, leading to a scuffle.
Based on reports, Walker pushed Adrian to the ground, and then proceeded to chop him several times. The victim, after sustaining chop wounds to his neck and face, attempted to escape but collapsed along a trail. His body was later discovered in a puddle of blood. Adrian was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The village Toshao subsequently intercepted Walker and handed him over to the police.
State prosecutor Marisa Edwards summarised the particulars of the offence before the court, while Walker sat visibly resigned and remorseful. Attorney Charlyn Artiga appeared on behalf of the accused.
As the details of the crime were highlighted, Walter immediately told the court that they were true. He also confirmed that his guilty admission was free from any external influences.
Because of his guilty plea, there was no need for a jury to be empanelled. His next appearance on May 6, will be for sentencing.
