Kaieteur Sports – A long but competitive day of Draughts was held at the Transport Sports Club where two tournaments were held in one day. The tiresome players made their way from 11am to 9pm. Only the fittest survived, some retired while some quitted. Most of the survivors were senior players.
In the first match on the 8×8 boards, Linden player Floyd Cumberbatch with 33 points won that competition with veteran Aubrey Straughn 26 points taking the second prize. Steve Bacchus on 24 and Godfrey George also on 24 captured the 3rd and 4th places respectively. The rest of players were well bunched up behind making the competition very competitive. Trophies sponsored by Fast Relief Pharmacy & Animal Health were distributed to the top four players.

From left, Proprietor Randol Gibbs, Jiaram, Bacchus, Dr. English, Daniel Nicholson and Ranella Alexander, Store’s Sales Personnel. Absent was Cumberbatch.
The second half on the 10×10 boards started late in the evening. The 10×10 is played internationally on bigger boards and more pieces making the game more complicated. In this game Steve Bacchus on 12 points emerged victorious, while Dr. Ivor English on 11 points took the second place. Earlier it was 11 points for both Bacchus and English but a walk over point for Bacchus gave him the nod. President of the Association Mr. Jiaram with a close 10 points occupied the 3rd position while Floyd Cumberbatch on 8 points settled for 4th. Floyd had 3 walk overs which is only one point each restricting him of taking wins due to the quitting of some players.
The presentation for the last segment took place at the Store of Midnight Closet Tuesday on David Street Kitty, opposite J.E Pollard School. Mr. Randol Gibbs Proprietor of business was pleased to award cash incentives to the four players in that category. Mr. Gibbs a former member of the Association and a player by virtue said that once business progressed as usual, he would repeat next year’s sponsorship.
Mr. Rohan Chunilall Proprietor of Fast Relief Pharmacy also proclaimed same sentiments.
The National Draughts Association would like to thank both Sponsors for their selfless support. Thanks to the National Sports Commission’s Ms. Melissa Dow Richardson (ADOS) for supporting with water and drinks on that hot day.
