Kaieteur Sports – Olympic Kremlin will have one last shot at Guyana Cup glory before one of Guyana’s most celebrated thoroughbreds bows out of racing.
The nine-year-old Brazilian-bred chestnut is being prepared for what will be his final competitive appearance when the 18th annual Guyana Cup takes centre stage at the Rising Sun Turf Club on August 23.
For Slingerz Racing Stable, it is more than a bid to reclaim a coveted crown. It is the final chapter in the career of the horse that helped transform the relatively young stable into a household name in Guyana racing.

One of Guyana’s celebrated horses, Olympic Kremlin will race for the last time at the 2026 Guyana Cup.
Stable owner Javed Ali confirmed that Olympic Kremlin will be retired after the Guyana Cup, bringing the curtain down on a career that has already secured his place among the country’s elite thoroughbreds.
Bred from Agnes Gold as sire and Sweet Lemonade as dam, Olympic Kremlin was foaled in Brazil in 2017 and joined Slingerz in 2024.
He in fact arrived in Guyana from Brazil, just mere days before he delivered the stable its biggest breakthrough, storming to victory in the 2024 Guyana Cup, the “holy grail” of local racing, and announcing Slingerz as a force to be reckoned with.
Olympic Kremlin’s 2024 campaign was nothing short of outstanding. He added the President’s Cup and the Showdown of Champions at Port Mourant Turf Club before being crowned 2024 Horse of the Year at the One Guyana Thoroughbred Racing Awards.
Now, Slingerz Racing wants its champion to go out on top.
The Guyana Cup headlines a blockbuster 14-race programme organised by the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee, with more than $65 million in total prize money up for grabs.
But for many fans, Olympic Kremlin’s final appearance in the $22m Banks Guyana Cup will be the day’s biggest attraction.
There is also unfinished business.
Last year, Olympic Kremlin returned to defend his Guyana Cup crown before a starting-gate malfunction robbed him of the opportunity. The champion and another Slingerz runner were left stranded while the remainder of the field broke away.
It was a bitter ending for a horse that had entered as defending champion and carried the hopes of thousands who had turned out to see him race for back-to-back victories.
Ali, however, says the stable has moved on and is focused entirely on this year’s showdown, particularly after receiving assurances that the problems experienced last year will not be repeated.
Slingerz has also taken a calculated approach to Olympic Kremlin’s preparation, carefully managing his campaign and building him towards his final assignment.
The veteran has shown enough in recent outings to suggest he remains a serious contender. He finished second behind Dataman in this year’s Banks DIH Classic before placing third behind Stat and Mapa Do Brasil in last month’s CARICOM Cup.
For Ali, though, the Guyana Cup is about more than reclaiming a trophy. It is about giving Olympic Kremlin the opportunity to write the final line of his own story.
The horse has become a fan favourite and one of the most recognisable names on the local racing circuit.
On August 23, thousands are expected to flock to Rising Sun not only to witness another Guyana Cup, but to salute a champion who has given them some of the sport’s most memorable moments.
Slingerz wants the title back. Olympic Kremlin wants one final victory. And the racing fraternity will be hoping the old champion has one more run left in him.
