15-year-old arrested after Corriverton fisherman dies following altercation
(Kaieteur News) – Residents of Corriverton, Corentyne, are reeling from shock after a 55-year-old fisherman reportedly died following an altercation with a 15-year-old on Wednesday night.
Police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) have confirmed the death of Asmat Mohamed Hussain, of Lot 23 Dukestown, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice, and the arrest of the teen in connection with the incident.

According to information gathered, the incident occurred at about 21:00hrs near a supermarket in the area. The 15-year-old, who is of mixed ancestry, also resides in Corriverton.
Based on information received, Hussain was seated among relatives and friends from the community on Wednesday night when he got up and made his way toward a Chinese-operated supermarket. Moments later, he was seen lying on the ground a short distance from where he had been sitting, and it was observed that he was bleeding.
The teen, who was reportedly in possession of a knife believed to be the murder weapon, fled the scene shortly after the incident.
Police disclosed that the fisherman and the teen had been involved in a violent scuffle, which led to Hussain sustaining fatal injuries. The extent of those injuries has not been released.
Hussain’s brother transported him to the No. 75 Village Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
His body was taken to a funeral parlour to await a post-mortem examination.
Police made contact with the 15-year-old shortly after the incident, and he was arrested. He remains in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
Investigators say CCTV cameras were observed in the area and will be reviewed as part of the probe.
Investigations are ongoing.
