ExxonMobil produced one billion barrels of oil in less than 7 years – Routledge

(Kaieteur News) – Guyana has an oil reserve of about 11.6B barrels according to estimates provided by the Government of Guyana (GoG). In just over six years since production activities commenced in December 2019, ExxonMobil, the operator of the Stabroek Block has already produced a staggering one billion barrels of those resources.

This was revealed by President of ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL), Alistair Routledge during the launch of the 2027 Guyana Energy Conference on Tuesday.

During remarks, the principal sponsor of the event shared remarks, guided by the conference’s theme ‘Beyond frontiers, Guyana’s Energy story’.

Routledge told the gathering that Guyana has already achieved the unimaginable considering the rapid pace of development and production.

“We’ve achieved beyond the imaginable in Guyana already, the pace of developments since that first miraculous discovery in May 2015, here we are just 11 years after and we are already producing around 900,000 barrels per day,” the Country Manager noted, as he pointed out that the country’s daily capacity will increase before the end of the year as the fifth project, Uaru is expected to come online. The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel that will produce hydrocarbons, as the project is already on its way to Guyana and will push production past one million barrels per day.

To this end, he reported, “Indeed another milestone that we are about to push past depending on how you count the barrels, we may already have surpassed a billion barrels of production in Guyana. The first billion barrels. Quite a feat in such a short space of time and truly pushing beyond frontiers than in any other deep water or even offshore location has never been achieved at this pace with the same safety record and protection of the environment…”

The Exxon official highlighted the importance of Guyana’s oil that is helping to provide critical resources to the globe as tensions continue in the Middle East.

He pointed out that the collaboration with government has been the foundation of these achievements and working with the local private sector as he highlighted the importance of the Guyana Energy Conference in striking those connections.

In November 2024, the company produced its first 500 million barrels of oil. At that time, the first three projects were producing around 650,000 bpd.

Currently, four projects, Liza One and Two, Payara and Yellowtail, are producing oil in the Stabroek Block at an average daily rate of about 870,000 barrels per day (bpd) according to recent statistics published by government.

Exxon has received regulatory approval from the GoG for seven projects. The sixth development, Whiptail is anticipated to add 250 kbd by the end of 2027. Additionally, Hammerhead, is expected to come online by 2029, producing 150,000 bpd.

The seven projects are likely to take Guyana’s production to around 1.5 million barrels per day.

In the meantime, ExxonMobil has submitted plans to the GoG to develop two additional projects in the Stabroek Block. In March this year, Routledge said the company was set to submit a Field Development Plan (FDP) for the eighth project, Longtail, to the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Exxon is simultaneously building a ninth project which aims to develop the gas resources in the Haimara discovery.
