Elite League raises stakes with $12M prize package
…League kicks off on August 29
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has raised the stakes for the 2026/27 Elite League, unveiling a significantly enhanced $12 million prize package as Season Eight prepares to kick off on August 29.
The country’s premier men’s football competition will feature the same 10 clubs from last season, with newly promoted Camptown FC joining defending champions Slingerz FC, Guyana Police Force FC, Guyana Defence Force FC, Western Tigers FC, Santos FC, Monedderlust FC, Ann’s Grove United, Den Amstel FC and Fruta Conquerors FC.
The new season, which will run for approximately six months, is expected to provide a tougher and more competitive battle for the national championship, while offering clubs and players greater rewards and opportunities.
This year’s Elite League winners stand to collect a bigger purse and defending champs Slingerz will look to cash in.
At the centre of the changes is the GFF’s decision to increase the total prize package to $12 million, with all 10 clubs guaranteed a financial return based on their final positions.
The champions will collect $4 million, while the runners-up will receive $3 million and the third-placed team $2 million. Fourth place carries a $1 million reward, while fifth will earn $500,000.
Clubs finishing sixth through 10th will each receive $300,000.
The increased rewards represent a significant boost from previous seasons and are intended to make the competition more attractive while providing clubs with meaningful financial returns for their performances.
The GFF has also expanded the squad limits, giving clubs greater depth to negotiate the demands of a lengthy campaign.
Teams can now register up to 35 players, five more than the 30-player limit in Season Seven. Match-day squads have also been increased from 20 to 23 players, allowing coaches greater tactical flexibility and providing more players with opportunities to feature.
Another potentially significant development is the GFF’s review of arrangements that could allow clubs to host Elite League matches at their own home venues.
The federation is currently examining the commercial terms and infrastructure requirements for such arrangements. Any venue approved for home matches must satisfy the GFF’s competition standards, with details expected to be communicated once the review is completed.
The Season Eight regulations were released following consultations between the GFF and all 10 participating clubs.
The federation said feedback from the clubs, together with lessons from Season Seven, informed several of the amendments incorporated into the new regulations.
The competition will be played over two rounds, with the first phase running from August through November. Following a scheduled break, the league will resume in February 2027 before concluding in May.
Beyond the battle for the championship and the increased financial rewards, the Elite League remains a crucial component of the country’s football development structure.
The competition provides the GFF’s technical staff with an extended platform to identify and assess players for national-team selection, while giving emerging talent regular exposure to high-level domestic competition.
Slingerz FC will enter the season seeking to retain the crown after dominating the previous campaign, but they are expected to face stiff opposition from a field determined to challenge their supremacy.
With bigger squads, more money on the line, potential home venues and six months of competitive football ahead, the GFF is banking on Season Eight delivering a stronger and more compelling product.
The race begins on August 29, with the federation urging supporters to turn out in numbers, rally behind their clubs and help create the atmosphere required to elevate the Elite League to another level.
