Kaieteur Sports – The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has announced the temporary suspension of all activities under its Government-supported Teach Them Young, Learn to Swim Programme as the nation mourns the tragic loss of lives in the MV Barima incident.
Organisers confirmed that all swimming classes have been cancelled with immediate effect and will remain suspended until Monday, July 27, in observance of the three days of national mourning declared by the President Irfaan Ali, following Guyana’s latest national tragedy, which has left several communities and families in a state of grief.
The decision was taken as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives and in solidarity with the families and loved ones affected by the devastating incident.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Sports Commission extended their deepest sympathies to all those impacted, noting that the welfare of the nation remains paramount during this difficult period.
Subject to further notice, the annual swimming programme is expected to resume on Monday, July 27.
“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time,” organisers said in a brief statement.
