Kaieteur Sports – A magnificent all round performance from the highly talented Japhet Khan inspired the Rose Hall Town Poonai’s Pharmacy Under 12 team to a third consecutive victory in the Berbice Cricket Board/Faizal Jafferally Under 12 tournament. They defeated Port Mourant by 40 runs to emerge champions of Zone C and earned a place in the quarter finals of the tournament.
Playing in blazing sunshine, Rose Hall Town won the toss and elected to bat first at the Whim Community Centre. They reached a healthy 164 for 3 from their allotted 20 overs with Japhet Khan topscoring with a magnificent 70 not out. Khan struck five delightful fours and cleared the ground twice. He received support from Arden Moore with 30 with two fours while Dancel LaCruz 10 and Taresh Nanie 12 also supported well in the middle order. A. Chandradyal 2 for 17 and L. Charran 2 for 23 (4 overs) bowled well for the Port Mourant Cricket Club.
Needing to score 165 runs from 20 overs to stand a chance of advancing to the quarterfinals, Port Mourant were rocked early when medium pacer Evan Dhanpat bowled H. Mootain 04 and N. Bislall 07 to leave them 15 for 2 in the 3rd over. A. Chandradyal 15, L. Charran 13 and L. Kissoon 20 batted well to rally Port Mourant to 98 for 5 before medium pacer Japhet Khan took three wickets in an over to sink their chances of overhauling the 165 target.
They were eventually dismissed for 124 in the 16th over and were unable to reach the quarterfinals as Rose Hall Town Poonai’s Pharmacy and Albion Community Centre A advanced from Zone C. Japhet Khan completed a good all round performance with 3 for 9 from two overs while off spinner Taresh Nanie took 3 for 12 from 3.1 overs. Medium pacers Evan Dhanpat 2 for 13 and Lamar LeFleur 2 for 8 supported well.
The Faizal Jafferally Under 12 Tournament is one of several junior tournaments to be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board and serves as an nursery for the county under 13 team. The Rose Hall Town Poonai’s Pharmacy Under 11 and Under 13 teams are currently the defending Berbice Champions at the two levels.
