(Kaieteur Sports) The Bayroc National Stadium in Linden has emerged as Guyana’s only track and field facility currently listed as certified by World Athletics.
According to track and field’s global governing body’s latest listing of certified athletics facilities, Bayroc is classified as a Class 2 certified venue. The track was officially commissioned in February.
World Athletics classifies its facilities according to specific technical requirements.
Class 1 certification, generally associated with the highest level of international competition, including the Olympic Games and World Championships, requires a comprehensive technical audit of the structural and technical aspects of the stadium and venue.
It also requires in-situ testing of the synthetic surface by a World Athletics-accredited laboratory to verify force reduction, friction and deformation.
Class 2 certification, which Bayroc currently holds, requires a complete and accurate measurement survey of the track’s layout and markings.
Fresh on-site laboratory testing of the surface is not required where a valid, pre-existing Product Certificate exists for the specific synthetic surfacing material.
The classification is intended for regional, national and standard international competitions, making Bayroc an important addition to Guyana’s athletics infrastructure.
At the commissioning of the Linden facility, President Irfaan Ali spoke profoundly about the Government of Guyana’s drive to establish world-class sporting facilities across the country, while highlighting the importance of bringing such an investment to Linden, a community with a rich athletics tradition that has produced some of the country’s outstanding athletes.
Guyana’s first synthetic athletics facility was the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburgh, West Demerara, which was completed in 2015 and was previously certified by World Athletics.
With Guyana scheduled to host the 2027 CARIFTA Games, the Government is expected to move towards bringing the facility fully into compliance with current World Athletics certification requirements.
Meanwhile, preparations are continuing for the opening of a new track and field facility in Berbice.
Once the Berbice facility becomes operational, Guyana will have three major synthetic track and field facilities, representing a significant expansion of the country’s athletics infrastructure.
