Kaieteur Sports – Hardened fifties from Captain Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge bailed the Volcanoes out of possibly imploding, as they enter a crucial 3rd day at the Coolidge Cricket Ground trailing by 63 runs with the Harpy Eagles two down but in a comfortable position as they eye a third win.
Resuming on 22-1, the Windwards would go onto post 2 in their first innings, replying to the Eagles 1st innings 242.
Hodge was the backbone of the innings, leading with 74 featuring 8 fours but it was Volcanoes captain Alick Athanaze, who finally seemed to have found his footing, batting hard for what looked like a return-to-form 50* off 83 (5×4, 1×6).
Opener Stephan Pascal (43) had a solid innings, as another collective effort with the ball led by left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (4-52), pacers Nial Smith (2-27), Shamar Joseph (2-64) and Keemo Paul (1-42); helped to avoid a possible eruption by the Volcanoes batsmen in the 1st innings.
With nineteen runs still ahead after bowling out their opponents, the Eagles batting for a second time extended their lead by an additional.. Runs as they ended day 2 on 44-2, with Tevin Imlach (16*) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (19*) set to resume today.
The in-form form pair of Ryan John (1-7) and Gilon Tyson (1-11) managed to make inroads a few overs before stumps; bagging the big wickets of Matthew Nandu (0) and Kevlon Anderson (5).
When play resumed on the second day, Windwards who initially lost their key wicket of opener Ackeem Auguste for 2, a little before close of play on day 1; were somewhat bumped a few steps back.
However, the overnight pair of Pascal and Hodge put in a much-needed century stand which turned out to be an ideal repair job, before the former was removed by Motie, who eventually got rid of Johan Jeremiah (16) after.
Hodge played well and kept the Eagles bowling attack on their toes as he exhibited immense patience during his innings, which played a big part in the team’s chase.
But shortly after the Volcanoes reached their team’s 150, another critical setback befell them when Hodge succumbed to a good delivery from the speedster Joseph.
Athanaze cycled through a few of his lower-order partners and was eventually left unbeaten, as he sought to finally acquire some batting form after a horrible season by his world class standards; thanks to Motie and company who mopped up the tail-enders without little resistance.
Play continues today.
