Chinese Enterprises Association donates relief supplies to CDC for families affected by MV Barima tragedy
(Kaieteur News) – The Chinese Embassy in Guyana, the Association of Chinese Enterprises, and the Chinese community in Guyana on Tuesday donated relief supplies to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) for survivors and families affected by the MV Barima tragedy.
The donated items, which included food supplies and toiletries, were handed over at CDC’s headquarters at Thomas Lands, in the presence of Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang, representatives of the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Guyana, Deputy Director General of CDC Lt. Col. (Ret’d) Mark Thomas, and CDC staff.

In brief remarks, Thomas said the CDC was grateful to receive the items on behalf of the persons and families affected by the tragedy. “I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that the items we received here today, we would be making arrangements to get these items out to Region One so that the affected families can receive these items,” he said. “Once again, on behalf of the staff and Director General of the CDC, thanks for this gesture.”
Ambassador Yang, speaking on behalf of the Embassy, the Association of Chinese Enterprises, and the Chinese community, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families who lost loved ones. She said the friendship between China and Guyana has grown over many years through mutual understanding, respect, and support, and that in difficult times, it is important to stand together and offer whatever help possible.
The first batch of relief supplies donated to the CDC from the Chinese companies operating in Guyana for families affected by the recent MV Barima tragedy.
“These supplies were collected by our Chinese enterprises and the Chinese community here, and we would like to extend them to the CDC, and hope these supplies would be of some practical help to the families,” she said.
The items are the first batch collected by Chinese companies operating in Guyana, with more assistance expected in the coming days. This publication understands that Chinese companies have also dispatched three vessels currently taking part in the search and rescue operation at the scene.
The Ambassador added: “The people of Guyana are not facing this difficult time alone. Please remember, whatever happens, your Chinese friends — we are here for you.”
The MV Barima capsized on the night of 18th July while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, Region One, with some 179 people on board. The incident has since claimed 73 lives, with the bodies of the deceased — including men, women, and children — recovered. Seventy-six persons have been rescued, and authorities say at least 30 remain missing.
