Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has reaffirmed stability and forward-thinking leadership following its Annual General Meeting and Election of Office Bearers on Saturday, with incumbent President David Fernandes returned unopposed to lead the sport into its next phase of development.
Fernandes will head an executive that blends continuity with a notable shift toward inclusivity, particularly through increased female representation in key leadership roles, a move widely seen as a progressive step for the sport’s administration in Guyana.
Among the newly confirmed executive members are Loraine Ince as Vice-President, Victoria Arjoon as Secretary, Ashley DeGroot-Khalil as Treasurer, and Ashley Khalil as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. Strengthening the association’s leadership structure further are Roseann Bulkan, who takes responsibility for Junior Affairs, and Tian Edwards as Chairperson of Competitions.
Deje Dias has been appointed as Clubs Representative, while Owen Verwey continues in his role as Returning Past President. Alex Arjoon also remains integral to the structure as Athletes Representative, ensuring that players’ voices remain central to decision-making.
A defining feature of the new executive is the significant presence of women in leadership positions, reflecting a deliberate effort by the GSA to foster inclusivity while strengthening governance across all levels of the sport.
Due to the absence of an AGM in the previous year, the newly elected body has agreed to serve a one-year term. The decision was taken in good faith to ensure that the association remains compliant with its constitutional obligations and aligned with best practices in sports governance.
In reflecting on his re-election, Fernandes highlighted the unique culture that underpins squash in Guyana, describing the association as more than just an organisation.
The association enters its new term buoyed by significant infrastructural progress. One of the standout achievements in 2025 was the commissioning of new doubles courts, a long-anticipated project that has now become a reality.
This addition complements the existing five singles courts at the public facility, greatly enhancing training opportunities for local players.
Looking ahead, the GSA is already focused on major international commitments, most notably Guyana’s hosting of the 2027 Pan American Junior Championships.
