Kaieteur Sports – Clinical half-century knocks from Kemol Savory and Keemo Paul put the Guyana Harpy Eagles on course for what could be their second successive win should they remain locked in and possibly build on their 210- run lead going into a pivotal third day at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
The Champs took their 1st innings score to 361-8 following the close of play on day 2, led by Matthew Nandu’s 54 on the first day and reinforced by a welcomed 56 with 7 fours and a six from the former West Indies all-rounder Paul, who looked like himself again.
Savory, who has been in good touch this season was the rock of the innings, cracking a 157-ball 72 (9×4), with some help from Richie Looknauth (42) who batted well during a tough period.
Leading an ordinary bowling effort for the Volcanoes, spinner Kenneth Dember (3-82) was the pick of the lot with help from Ryan John (1-50) and all-rounder Shadrack Descarte (2-59) who found it hard to get past the Eagles middle-lower order.
After losing Matthew Nandu during the final session of day 1, following a brisk half-century which set the pace for the second day proceedings.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored a grueling 35 off 196 balls with a solitary four, barely adding to his overnight score, as did skipper Tevin Imlach (9) who never got going.
The left/right combination of Savory and Paul managed to regain control of the ship, anchoring in as they frustrated the Volcanoes bowling attack, which was forced to watch both batters bring up their respective half-centuries in a time of need.
Guyana were past 250 by the time tea arrived and despite losing Paul a few runs after reaching his first half-century of the season, Savory remained the key for the Eagles who had gained a nice 100-plus run heading into the final session of play.
But the left-hander lost his footing and was eventually undone by part-timer Kavem Hodge (1-13). Looknauth then took over alongside Veerasammy Permaul (25*) and the two kept the runs flowing.
Looknauth batted sensibly as he hit 6 fours but was dismissed inches away from his fifty, leaving Shamar Joseph (10*) and Permaul still holding firm at the end of the day’s play.
Action on day 3 continues today.
