Eccles All Stars wins Jevaughn Stephen Memorial seven a side Tapeball cricket competition
Kaieteur Sports – Eccles All Stars cricket club made sure that their journey to Berbice was worth the while when they won the annual Jevaughn Stephen Memorial Tapeball Competition.

The competition was played recently under floodlights at the Locaber Ground in West Canje, Berbice. Jevaughn Stephen was a multitalented sports man and former Director of Regional Health Service in Berbice. He was 37.
The Seven a side competition saw 10 teams from across Guyana participate in the one day five overs affair.
The teams were divided into two groups.
Group A- composed of Eccles All Stars, Guymine, Sip and Play Grill Masters, Medical Technicians and Underdog Scrapes.
Mrs Esther Stephen presents the winning amount of $200,000 and Jevaughn Stephen Memorial trophy to the winning Eccles All Stars Cricket team as other family members and organisers share the moment.
Group B was made up of defending champions- Tucber Park Cricket Club, Alpha Of Alpha, East Bank All Stars, Underdogs and Police Masters.
Eccles came out winners of Group A with Sip and Play being the runner up. Alpha topped Group B with Tucber Park CC the runner up.
In the semifinals – Eccles defeated Tucber Park CC by 7 wickets. Tucber Park 31. Eccles 38-0 with Yusuf 23.
Alpha of Alpha defeated Sip and Play Grill Masters by 6 wickets. Sip and Play GM-22 all out.
Bowling for Alpha – Algoo took 4 wickets. They replied with 24-1.
In an entertaining and pulsating final, Eccles All Stars got the better of Alpha of Alpha by two wickets off the last ball of their innings. Needing four off the last delivery, they got four leg byes to bring consternation among the Alpha players and supporters and jubilation for Eccles.
Batting first in the five overs affair. Alpha rattle up 49 all out. Dhanai scored 21, Latchman 15.
Bowling for Eccles – Oswald Joseph, 3 wickets for 2 runs, T. Bandoo – 2 wickets.
In reply Eccles All Stars 50 -3. Yusuf scored 16.
Bowling for Alpha – D. Latchman took 2 wickets. Joseph was named man of the match.
The presentation ceremony which followed immediately after the final was done by members of the Stephen’s family and Mayor of New Amsterdam Waynewright McIntosh. Mc Intosh also made brief remarks.
The winning All Stars team was presented with S200,000 and the Jevaughn Stephen trophy by Mrs. Ester Stephen, his grandmother.
Alpha collected $100,000 and trophy, while third place Sip and Play received $50,000 and trophy.
Tucber Park received three bats from the Stephen’s family in recognition as the team Jevaughn started his cricketing journey with and played during his early days.
The individual prizes were swept by players from Eccles with MVP award going to Quazim Yusuf. The best batsmen being Beepaul Bandhu with Joseph copping the best bowler award. All the individual awardees received trophies.
Stephen apart from being the Director of the Regional Health Services in Berbice was a multitalented athlete and also worked at various other agencies.
He represented Demerara as a fast bowling all-rounder at the U15 level whilst attending President’s College.
He played cricket at various levels in Berbice for Police and Tucber Park among other teams.
Jevaughn was Administrator for the Police Cricket Club. Helped revitalize the Mental Hospital Cricket Club and also served as its president. He served as Vice President of the Berbice Cricket Board.
In athletics he was champion athlete for President’s College in the 100M, 200M and 400M events for a number of years and was National school 400M champion.
In politics he was a senior member of the Peoples National Congress Reform. Served as the Party’s Region 6 Regional Chairman. Regional Councilor and Councilor of the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council.
In entertainment he opened the Sip and Play entertainment spot in New Amsterdam and formed his own Group – the CNA entertainment Company which was one of the top in the country.
He was also a worker’s representative and was into large scale farming. (Samuel Whyte)
