Kaieteur Sports – Former Member of Parliament and current People’s Progressive Party Supervisor of Region 5, Faizal Jaffarally, on Thursday last came on board to support Berbice Cricket as the sponsor of an Under 12 tournament.
A long-time sponsor of Berbice Cricket under the presidency of Hilbert Foster, Jaffarally stated that he agreed to come on board once again after being urged by the former president in the interest of youth cricketers in the county.
Jaffarally, a veteran member of the ruling party and who served in the last parliament, stated that he was very delighted to once again sponsor the tournament at the Under 12 level, the lowest age group in Berbice Cricket. He noted that with proper organising of the tournament, the BCB would be able to develop a nursery for its Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 inter-county teams.
Jaffarally, under Foster’s leadership between 2018 to 2024, sponsored a second division tournament in the West Berbice area and also the Faizal Jaffarally Trust Fund for over twelve teams in the area. Under the Trust Fund, the BCB provided cricket balls, scorebooks and cricket equipment to the West Berbice clubs. Among the clubs that benefitted were Cotton Tree Die Hard, D’Edwards, Achievers Sports Club, Bath, Shieldstown and Blairmont.
The former Member of Parliament urged cricket administrators in the ancient county to work in the best interest of the game and pledged his support in the future once he is satisfied with the success of the tournament.
Office Administrator of the Berbice Cricket Board, Angela Haniff, who received the sponsorship from Jaffarally, expressed her delight that the popular community leader was once again back as an official sponsor of the board after an absence of several years.
The Under 12 tournament would be open to players born on or after the 1st of September 2014. The board is hoping that at least twelve teams of Under 12 players would participate in the tournament.
Among the teams expected to play are Albion, Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy, No. 73 Young Warriors, Rose Hall Canje, Mount Sinai, Cotton Tree and Achievers Sports Club.
The former Berbice Cricket Board Secretary stated that the board was confident of forming an elite squad of twenty-four promising players for future development. The BCB, she stated, hopes to continue producing outstanding players to follow in the footsteps of John Trim, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Alvin Kallicharran, Roy Fredericks and Joseph Solomon.
Over the last decade, Berbice has produced numerous players for the West Indies including Gudakesh Motie, Veerasammy Permaul, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Joseph, Assad Fudadin, Shimron Hetmyer, Devendra Bishoo, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Kevin Sinclair and Kelvon Anderson.
The Faizal Jaffarally Under 12 Tournament would be played using a taped Windball on a shorten pitch.
