…Guyana shows promise despite Qualifiers exit
Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s senior women’s football team, the Lady Jags, concluded their 2025/26 Concacaf W Qualifiers campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Jamaica on Saturday night at the National Stadium Kingston.
The result confirmed Jamaica’s dominance in Group B, as the Reggae Girlz maintained a perfect 4-0-0 record to secure qualification for the 2026 Concacaf W Championship.
The hosts wasted little time asserting control, opening the scoring in the eighth minute through captain Manchester City forward, Khadija Shaw, who powered home a header from inside the box. Guyana, however, responded with resilience, tightening defensively and showing improved organization as the match progressed.
Despite their efforts to keep the contest within reach, Jamaica struck again late in the game. In the 88th minute, Shania Hayles sealed the victory with another well-placed header, ensuring the home side closed out the group stage unbeaten.
For Guyana, the loss meant a third-place finish in Group B with a respectable 2-0-2 record. While it marked the end of their qualification hopes, the campaign offered encouraging signs of growth and competitiveness on the regional stage.
Head coach Omar Khan acknowledged Jamaica’s superiority on the night but praised his team’s overall performance and spirit.
The Lady Jags’ journey in the qualifiers began on a challenging note last November with a 3-1 defeat to Nicaragua.
However, the team responded impressively, recording back-to-back victories with a 3-0 win over Dominica and a commanding 4-0 win against Antigua and Barbuda.
Those results highlighted the team’s attacking potential and resilience, even as consistency against top-tier opposition remains an area for development.
While the immediate goal of advancing to the Concacaf W Championship was not achieved, Guyana’s showing in the qualifiers underscores steady progress within the women’s programme.
