(Kaieteur News) – The woman accused of killing her seven-year-old daughter was on Monday remanded to prison when she appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, who is charged with murder, stood unrepresented before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, who read the allegation that on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Fyrish Village, Berbice, she murdered Isabella Dabadial.
The police prosecutor told the court that the case file is complete and that legal advice is being sought. The court also heard that Shivpersaud underwent a psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial.
Reports indicate that while hospitalised last week, Shivpersaud claimed she could not recall committing the act.
It is alleged that she strangled the child during a moment of distress linked to domestic issues and also attempted to smother her one-year-old son.
The incident was discovered by the children’s grandmother. Both Shivpersaud and the child were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead on arrival. Shivpersaud was admitted after an apparent suicide attempt.
Given the seriousness of the charge, Magistrate Matthias remanded Shivpersaud to prison.
She is scheduled to reappear at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on May 12, 2026.
