2026/27 CWI Regional 4-Day Championships Round 1…GHE vs. WWIV
By Clifton Ross
Kaieteur Sports – A near-miss ton from Windward Volcanoes opener Ackeem Auguste, helped put his team a strong position against the Guyana Harpy Eagles heading into Day 2, despite a brilliant 6-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, following the end of day one’s play at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua.
The condensed new-look format for this, bowled off yesterday with the opening triple-header round, featuring an all-important tournament for the Guyana Harpy Eagles; who are eyeing their 4th consecutive title as this younger side looks to surpass the achievements of the formerly known Guyana Jaguars.
After losing the coin toss and being sent into bat first, the Volcanoes were kept in the match thanks to the West Indies limited overs batsman Auguste, who stroked a first innings, classy 95; narrowly missing his hundred.
The opener faced some 177 balls and hit 12 fours before his innings was cut short by first-class cricket’s leading wicket-taker in left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (1-94), who got the breakthrough but would end day one as the most expensive bowler for Guyana.
Kavem Hodge (31), who laboured during his 76-ball stay at the crease with one four to his credit and former West Indies batsman Sunil Ambris, who scored a fluent 30 off 36 deliveries (4×4), aided Auguste early on during the mission.
Meanwhile, the pair of Daron Nedd (35) who hit 6 fours and Ryan John who hit an additional 5 fours during his innings 42, helped to propel their team to a first innings score of 286 all out in the 87th over.
Medium-pacer Keemo Paul had a good opening day, bagging (2-27) alongside fast-bowler Nial Smith (1-65) and Windies left-arm spinner and pick of the lot Motie who snared 6-73 from roughly 23 overs; headlined a decent bowling exhibition by the Harpy Eagles.
At stumps, the Harpy Eagles were 2-0 and will need a lot from the pair of Tagenarine Chanderpaul (2*) and Matthew Nandu (0*), come today when play resumes.
In other games, Leewards Hurricanes (138 all out 1st innings ) lead Trinidad and Tobago Red Force (62-0 1st innings ) by 76 runs over at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Day 2’s action continues across the board today.
