Matthew Vieira faces sanctions following his assault on Ravi Singh during the GMR&SC event over the weekend.
Kaieteur Sports – Tensions boiled over at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club Kart Circuit during the MPS Kart Revival on Sunday, as a dramatic on-track incident between two riders escalated into a shocking physical altercation that has since drawn widespread attention across the local motorsport community.
The incident occurred during the final of the Supermoto race, when a clash between Superbike champion Matthew Vieira and fellow competitor Ravi Singh resulted in both riders going to the ground.
What followed, however, went beyond the boundaries of sport, as Vieira, after getting back to his feet, approached Singh, who was still on the ground, and struck him, slapping him in full view of spectators.
The altercation stunned fans in attendance and quickly overshadowed what had otherwise been a thrilling day of racing at the Thomas Lands circuit.
While motorsport is no stranger to high emotions and intense rivalries, such an act of physical aggression has been widely condemned as a serious breach of sportsmanship.
In the immediate aftermath, the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) issued a formal statement acknowledging the incident. However, notably, the club refrained from identifying the riders involved.
In its statement, the GMR&SC said it had “taken note of an incident during the final of the Supermoto race at its sanctioned event ‘Kart Revival’” and strongly condemned the actions of the offender.
“The club is acting on the matter,” the statement read. “Penalties and bans, in line with its code of conduct, will be instituted to deter future transgressions. GMR&SC reminds the public, its fans, and enthusiasts that it takes these transgressions seriously, as it goes against true sportsmanship and camaraderie in the motor racing fraternity.”

Matthew Vieira faces sanctions following his assault on Ravi Singh during the GMR&SC event over the weekend.
Despite the governing body’s measured response, clarity on the identities of those involved came through other channels, with Matthew Vieira subsequently issuing a public apology in which he directly acknowledged Ravi Singh and accepted responsibility for his actions.
In a detailed statement, Vieira expressed regret to spectators, sponsors, and members of the racing fraternity, while also offering a personal apology to Singh.
“I would like to extend my sincere apologies… Most importantly, I wish to personally apologise to Ravi Singh,” Vieira stated.
He explained that the incident unfolded in the heat of competition, noting that he had worked his way from last position to first and was in the process of lapping Singh when the situation developed. According to Vieira, a lack of a blue flag signal, typically used to indicate that a faster rider is approaching to lap another, contributed to the confusion on track.
“In that moment, with adrenaline high and emotions running strong, I allowed my frustration to get the better of me,” he admitted. “This is not an excuse, but rather an explanation.”
Vieira was clear in accepting accountability, acknowledging that his reaction was inappropriate and did not reflect the standards he strives to uphold as a national athlete and representative of the sport.
“I fully acknowledge that my reaction was inappropriate… I regret my actions and the negative impact they may have had on the event, the club, and the sport as a whole,” he said, while emphasizing that he holds no personal grievance against Singh.
The Superbike champion also indicated his willingness to face the consequences of his actions, stating that he accepts full responsibility and remains committed to learning from the experience.
The focus now shifts to the GMR&SC and the disciplinary measures that will follow. With the club having already signaled its intent to impose penalties and possible bans in accordance with its code of conduct, the spotlight is firmly on what action will be taken against one of the country’s top riders.
As the investigation continues, the outcome will likely set a significant precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
