Region #3 First Family Youth Basketball Jamboree set for May 2
Kaieteur Sports – As school’s basketball continues to experience a surge in local competition, the D-Up Basketball Academy is once again stepping up to nurture emerging talent with the launch of its third annual Youth Basketball Jamboree. The much-anticipated one-day event is scheduled for May 2 at the Tuschen Primary School court and promises a thrilling showcase of young athletic ability.
Dubbed the First Family Youth Basketball Jamboree, the programme is being staged in honour of His Excellency President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and First Lady Arya Ali, in recognition of their continued efforts to support sports and youth development across Guyana.

This year’s edition will feature intense competition in Under-14 and Under-17 categories, with seven school teams competing in each division. Among the participating schools are prominent Georgetown institutions such as The Bishops’ High School, Queen’s College, Saint Stanislaus College, and President’s College. They will be joined by newer entrants including La Venture Secondary School, Patentia Secondary School, Golden Grove Secondary School, and Plaisance Secondary School.
The tournament will adopt a straight knockout format, ensuring high-stakes action from the opening whistle. Medals and trophies will be awarded to the top finishers, with teams battling for the coveted First Family Trophy.
Chairman of the D-Up Basketball Academy, Anthony Kandar, expressed enthusiasm at the tournament’s continued growth. “It is always a good feeling whenever basketball is in the air,” Kandar stated at the official launch. He explained that while the initiative was initially designed to target youths from Region Three, its success over the past two years has led to broader participation.
“This concept was initially aimed at youths of Region Three, but after what we have witnessed in the last two editions, we were always aiming to invite a few other teams, as you have seen with the new additions. The tournament has been growing steadily, thanks to our sponsors. We look forward to some good, clean fun, as D-Up Academy continues to provide these students the platform to showcase their talent in an organised space,” he added.
Action is set to tip off at 9:00 am, with both divisions running concurrently throughout the day. The jamboree continues to serve as a vital platform for identifying and developing basketball talent, bringing together players from across Regions Three and Four in a competitive yet supportive environment.
With its expanding reach and growing reputation, the D-Up Basketball Academy’s Youth Basketball Jamboree is fast becoming a cornerstone event on Guyana’s local sports calendar.
