(Kaieteur News) – Following up from a November 2025 engagement, the Ministry of Public Works has announced that they have officially finalised the arrangement to build a new tarmac to accommodate some 59 vendors who ply their trade along the Railway Embankment, at Buxton, East Coast of Demerara.
According to the ministry, Minister Juan Edghill alongside his technical team on Wednesday held a multi-stakeholder engagement with the Buxton-Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Representatives of the Buxton Vendors, the consultant Beston Consulting Inc. to finalise the agreement for relocation.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill meeting with vendors and other stakeholders at Buxton on Wednesday.
During the engagement, Minister Edghill reaffirmed, after the construction of the tarmac, the relocation exercise will not displace any vendor. He also outlined some of the amenities that will be provided for the vendors which include washroom facilities and lighting to ensure the security of all the vendors.
“The development of this tarmac will allow for the orderly relocation of vendors, thereby clearing the major road artery to enable the contractor to proceed with construction works in the area for the advancement of the East Coast Demerara Road Expansion Project,” the ministry informed.
The consultation back in November with the vendors, the ministry stated that it forms part of the Government’s approach to ensuring that any affected vendors remain informed and accommodated to continue their economic activity as works progress along the East Coast corridor.
“Works have commenced on the site with contractors, China Railway First Group (CRFG) beginning the clearing of the identified land along the Buxton Line Top, next to the Buxton-Foulis NDC for the new tarmac to be built for vending. This was made possible through collaboration with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) to ensure a suitable and accessible location for vendors who will have to relocate,” the ministry explained.
Further, the Public Works Ministry noted that it remains committed to the smooth transition of the vendors to the new site, committing to limited disruptions to the vendors. The ministry also wishes to advise the public that as the project continues to advance, further engagements will be held with vendors to ensure a smooth and orderly relocation process when the new vending area is completed.
As reported, the East Coast Demerara Road Expansion Project is one of the country’s major infrastructure undertakings which is aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing road safety for thousands of commuters who travel along the corridor daily.
Kaieteur News understands that the ministry recently made similar provisions for vendors at ‘B’ Field Sophia, as they look to widen the road network there.
