(Kaieteur News) – Ten-year-old Jadon and his eight-year-old sister, Tiana DeCourte, who tragically drowned behind the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) pump station at Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, will be laid to rest on March 14, 2026, the same day their parents celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Meanwhile, the children’s parents, Jason and Tesha DeCourte, are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examinations (PME), which are expected to be conducted today, as they continue making preparations for the funeral. The grieving parents disclosed this in an interview with Kaieteur News on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the communities of Melanie and Enterprise were plunged into shock and mourning after the two siblings were found motionless in a nearby trench behind the pump station. The trench, believed to be approximately 10 to 15 feet deep, is located near a reservoir that residents say has long posed a danger, particularly to children who are frequently in the said area adjacent to the community ground.
Their father recounted the heart-breaking sequence of events that led to the tragedy. According to DeCourte, Tiana had slipped into the trench while attempting to fill a toy water gun. When Jadon noticed his sister fall, he instinctively tried to hold onto her to prevent her from going under. However, unable to support both their weights, he too was pulled into the deep water.
Still struggling to accept the loss, the father on Thursday said the reality of the tragedy has not yet fully sunk in. “Up till now I still calling for Jadon and Tiana because I still can’t come to grips with it. I still can’t accept it. But when I see the bodies and they open up my children tomorrow (Friday), then it going to hit me,” he said.
He explained that the family has decided to hold the funeral on March 14, the day he and his wife would normally celebrate their wedding anniversary. “Our anniversary is the 14th, which will be the funeral day on Saturday. We were planning to go out for our anniversary. I was planning to surprise her, maybe go to Grand Coastal or the Marriott,” he said. Instead, the day will now hold a different meaning for the family.
“I feel if we bury our children on our anniversary we will get to bond even more. I can’t celebrate anything right now. We can’t do it right now as a family. Even if we separate in the future, we will always remember March 14,” the grieving father said.
“I gotta be stronger and better for my kids and my wife. Nothing will be the same without Jadon and Tiana,” Jason added. The government has since offered support to assist the family with funeral arrangements and any other help possible.
