(Kaieteur News) – Leon Bishop, also known as “Osmon Ali,” the man who attacked a security guard at a Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara (WBD) in June 2020, on Wednesday pleaded guilty to attempted murder.
Bishop appeared before Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence of attempt to commit murder, contrary to Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
The charge alleges that on June 17, 2020, Bishop attempted to kill Winston Small at a supermarket in Goed Fortuin village. The court heard that Bishop attacked and wounded the guard with a cutlass during the incident.
According to details presented to the court, Bishop entered the supermarket behaving suspiciously, which prompted Small to approach him. During the interaction, Bishop reportedly claimed that a man armed with a gun was chasing him, but no such person was seen in the area.
He then began knocking items from the supermarket shelves and attempted to exit through a side door. Small intervened and tried to restrain him, but Bishop ran towards the rear of the building.
Moments later, Bishop returned armed with an axe. Small armed himself with a hatchet in response. Bishop reportedly charged towards the guard with the axe, causing Small to drop the hatchet and attempt to grab hold of the weapon.
Bishop subsequently discarded the axe, picked up a 22-inch cutlass and began chopping the security officer.
Small sustained multiple injuries to his right hand, left calf, left cheek, head, forehead and left upper arm before losing consciousness. When he later regained consciousness, Bishop had already fled the scene.
The injured guard was first taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remained hospitalised for about two weeks.
A medical report later detailed the severity of the injuries, which included deep facial lacerations, the complete severing of the third finger on the right hand, partial severing of two other fingers, and multiple deep wounds involving bone and tendon. Doctors concluded that the injuries were life-threatening and would likely result in permanent disability and disfigurement.
Police later made contact with Bishop in the vicinity of Versailles and Goed Fortuin. After being cautioned, he reportedly told investigators that he had armed himself with a cutlass to defend himself after being attacked.
The State’s case was presented by prosecutors Christopher Belfield and Geneva Wills. The matter was adjourned to March 31, 2026, for sentencing.
