(Kaieteur News) – Construction of the $1.7B new Cotton Field Secondary School in Region Two is 48 percent completed.
Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Two, Susanah Saywack and engineers visited the construction site on Thursday, where they reviewed the status and progress of the scope of works and pace which was discussed with the consultant and contractor.
The school, which sod turning exercise took place in February 2026, is scheduled for completion in December 2026.
The construction of the school forms part of the Ministry of Education’s ongoing commitment to improving educational infrastructure and ensuring that schools across Guyana provide safe, modern, and supportive spaces for learning.
Kaieteur News reported that Builders Hardware, General Supplies, and Construction is executing the school project and was awarded the contract through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office for $1,798,137,760.
The new school will include modern classrooms, administrative offices, sports facilities, and other essential amenities to support a well-rounded learning environment for the students of Cotton Field and surrounding areas.
In January 2025, former Regional Chairperson, Vilma DeSilva told Kaieteur News that the new school is being constructed to accommodate an ever-increasing number of students.
“The existing one (school building) is very old it’s not feasible to repair. Also, the population is increasing,” DeSilva said.
Currently, there are 650 students attending the Cotton Field Secondary. While construction of the new school is ongoing, the students are being accommodated at the Anna Regina Multilateral School and will attend school via a shift system.
