Residents of Union No53 Community on the Corentyne complain of state of Sports Complex
Kaieteur Sports – Despite billions of dollars being budgeted and reportedly spent on the sports in Guyana, one of the largest community grounds in the country has been neglected with no plans in train of it being rehabilitated.
The Union No53 Sports Complex situated on the Corentyne has a two-story building with a Pavilion and a vast playfield. It was once one of the premiere sports and culture arenas in Berbice and Guyana. Now it has been neglected and left to deteriorate for reasons unknown.
The resident feel that government has turned their back on them.
Residents recently engaged and complained bitterly to Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed and a delegation including Member of Parliament Gobin Harbajan among others during a visit to the facility.
The resident stated that the last activities on the ball field was held in 2019. Since the government took office in 2020, the ground has been left abandoned. There is no electricity and no water in the facility.
Overgrown bushes have taken over the field, the fence and surrounding areas. There are no functioning washroom facilities.
The bridges leading to the field are in deplorable condition.
The surrounding drains are clogged up and need to be cleared. The building and pavilion are rotten and deteriorated and being overtaken by bushes. The place is taken over by wasps, rats, roaches and other insect. The playfield and surrounding bushes, house reptiles and other dangers.
The residents complain that garbage is not being collected by the NDC in the area.
The building previously housed a Coop, clinic, library, sewing room, and computer room among other accommodations.
The residents say that there are no streetlights in many parts of the community, creating safety concerns. Especially for children and older citizens.
They stated that the facility has since been locked by a PPP Councilor who they allege, is fighting to take control of the facility.
According to the residents, the facility belongs to the community. They said it was administered and taken care of by various management committees that were in place and past government back then. A Coop was also in place. The Leeds/ Union Restoration Group raised funds and helped in the restoration of the facility in days gone by. The previous government assisted with the rehabilitation of the fence and play field.
The residents are calling on the government to restore and rehabilitate the facility and ensure the citizens get street lights.
