Mario Washington takes Emancipation Cycle Road race in New Amsterdam

Kaieteur Sports – Flying Ace Cycle Club held a successful Emancipation Cycle Road Race around the town of New Amsterdam.
In the end it was national cyclist Mario Washington that took top honours in a duel with fellow National cyclist Andre “Padlock” Green.
The riders showed their intention from the start as the event was off to a blistering pace with Washington and Green showing their intentions early.

The event was for cyclists of Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice and Region 6 (East Berbice Corentyne only saw some 11 riders taking to the road.
The riders pedaled off from in front of the Level Up Bar at Charles Place and Republic Road, New Amsterdam, proceed along Republic Road, turn left into Vryheid Street, left into Main Street, proceed along New Amsterdam into Stanleytown, left into Tacama Turn and back into Republic Road. That sequence continued for ten laps before finishing at its place of origin.
The race began with the Mayor of New Amsterdam Wayne Wright Mc Intosh sending the riders on their way. That was after he led the riders on a one lap ride around the town of New Amsterdam.
Following Washington home was Green. Veteran rider Jaikarran Sookhai rode in third with Franco Crawford fourth, Deon “Snow Cone” David fifth and Errol Rose sixth.
Sookhai was the first veteran to cross the line with Crawford riding home second, David Third and Rose fourth.
DeQuan Rutherford was the winner in the junior category.
Franco Crawford “Junior” was the winner among the BMX riders with brothers Jayden Gladstone and Kayden Gladstone occupying the other two spots.

Washington rode away with four of the prime point prizes with Green taking the other two. Rose received a special prize for being the oldest rider on show.
Speaking to the cyclists before the start of the event, Mayor McIntosh congratulated the FACC for organizing an activity that not only promotes cycling, health and youth development. He said it also preserves the legacy of our ancestors and encourages continued appreciation for African history, culture and heritage.

Mc Intosh stated that the event paid tribute to the mighty African men and women who endured unimaginable hardships and demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience and determination in the historic struggle for freedom.
He stated that, as we commemorate Emancipation, may we continue to honour the sacrifices of our fore parents.
Mc Intosh also assisted with the presentation ceremony.
The race was coordinated by Founder, President and Veteran coach of the FACC Randolph Roberts.

The police were also congratulated.
