Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s Men’s Under-17 team battled well but came up short against host nation, Honduras, when the two teams met in their Group H encounter of the 2026 Concacaf Men’s U17 Qualifiers on Sunday night.
Honduras rallied to a 4 – 2 win over the Junior Jags at the General Francisco Morazán Stadium in San Pedro, Sula, to take command of the Group.
Both Honduras and Guyana have three points but the former is ahead on a superior Goal Difference of 2 while the latter has – 1. The other team in the Group, Bermuda (-1), suffered a 1 – 0 loss to Guyana and are yet to get on the points table.
Now, with only one match left to decide the outcome of the Group, Honduras versus Bermuda, Guyana’s chances of progressing are bleak with their quota of matches completed.
Only the eight (8) group winners (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H) will advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the previous edition of the Concacaf Under-17 Qualifiers, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the United States topped their respective groups to secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025.
On Sunday night, Guyana and Honduras engaged in an action-packed see-saw battle with the first half finishing 2 – 2. Honduras went ahead in the 18’ when Milton Moya scored but the equaliser was soon found by Matthew Stewart in the 23’. Nine minutes later Stewart put Guyana ahead to apply some pressure on the opposition.
However, after Guyana defenders kept getting beaten, Honduras were soon level again with Eduardo Roberts’ 38th-minute strike.
Guyana’s Goal keeper, Nyall Kendall, put in another sterling performance but could only do so much as Honduras constantly kept piercing the defence and applying shots on goal.
In the second half, Daniel Arzu (68’) and Josue Ortega (79’) were responsible for shifting the balance of the match back in Honduras’ favour.
The final Group H match is scheduled for February 11. This year’s qualifiers began on February 3 and will culminate on February 12.
