Kaieteur Sports – Ahead of the 2026 ICC Under-19 50-Over World Cup, Captain of the West Indies team Joshua Dorne credited series wins of Sri Lanka and England as confidence-boosters as the Caribbean side prepares for a competitive next few weeks of action across the African hosts nations; Namibia and Zimbabwe.
The Windies youth skipper prior to the team’s departure yesterday said that the exposure and experience of playing in a tournament of such magnitude is a huge plus for the entire squad. “The exposure of playing in an ICC tournament, an international tournament, playing against different international teams just gaining that experience; for everyone it means a lot so it will be good to get that experience”, said Dorne.
The Caribbean lads most recent high-point was their 5-2 ODI series win over England back in December prior to which they beat Sri Lanka 4-3 in the summer, two series which helped set the tone for the current squad’s aspirations of dominating the upcoming ICC youth Cup, as a number of their young stars including the skipper and his deputy Guyanese Johnathan Van Lange; having exceptional performances during those encounters.
Speaking briefly on the team’s confidence build coming off a commanding win over two elite teams, Dorne said the experience which the team gained was undoubtedly a massive boost in the confidence department. The captain also lauded the inclusion of young batting sensation Jewel Andrew, who he said brings tons of experience and wealth of knowledge from the highest levels to the current team.
“The experience of England and Sri Lanka defeating those two teams in the series gives us a big confidence boost going into the World Cup. Especially with Jewel in the team it means a lot for us. Obviously, he has a lot of international exposure and he can give information at any time while offering that experience he possesses”, Dorne explained.
West Indies U19 Head Coach Rohan Nurse briefly touched on the team’s progress in terms of the mood in the camp, which is currently at a high level as they prepare to carry that same momentum into their World Cup campaign. Nurse also said the team will be aiming for no less than a spot in the finals, as it will earmark vast improvement from the last Cup.
“Ultimately, we have started really well in terms of the series leading into the World Cup. We want to be able to start in that same mold and carry that momentum forward from that series against England into the World Cup. The minimum objective for us is to ensure we get into the final stage which would be bettering the team from the last World Cup,” said Nurse.
The 2026 ICC 50-Over World Cup will bowl off from January 15 with the West Indies sharing Group D alongside Afghanistan, South Africa and Tanzania; with the Caribbean side facing the Tanzanians in the first match from 9:30h. (Clifton Ross)
