Former Windies glove-man Murray calls for change of leadership, CWI reform

Kaieteur Sports – Former West Indies wicket-keeper/batsman Deryck Murray scorched the current Cricket West Indies (CWI) regime, calling for a change in leadership and direction.

Murray, who led Trinidad and Tobago from 1976-81, during a recent episode of the Mason and Guests Show, called for a change to the current Dr. Kishore Shallow-led administration.

Murray in a brief yet scathing attack, believed that West Indies cricket is in need of an overhaul, essentially calling for the removal of Shallow, who wears a few caps including Minister of Tourism and Maritime Affairs for the St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

He thinks the Cricket Sub-Committee of Caricom should get involved; something he was adamant about for the future preservation of the sport in the Caribbean.

An interim committee should also be something to think of, as a relationship between the CWI administration and Caricom Sub-Committee is critical for the revamping process.

He noted that when there is a need for transformation, such committees are introduced as part of measures which are used to help facilitate development throughout the world of Sports.

The former skipper pointed out that should any individual within the current administration take an analytic look at the current state of things, the dysfunctionality should be evidently clear.

As part of the 1975 and 1979 World Cup winning squads, the Trinidadian was undoubtedly keen on the interim committee playing a huge role in the reform process, citing a two-year period of operation for the proposed committee.

With Shallow already confirming he will likely not run again, Murray said it was important to put the necessary measures in place while setting up a structure which not only affects the senior levels but the grassroots as well.

Murray, who still holds the record for the most dismissals (24) by a Windies keeper for a single Test series, is hopeful that if specific moves are made within the next few years; a complete rehaul will most definitely help to put West Indies cricket back on track.

With 2026 set to be a strange year for Windies cricket, given the financial constraints coupled with the reshuffling of a few tournament dates throughout the calendar year; much is expected to be accomplished despite the different hurdles ahead.
