Powerlifting Federation pays tribute to esteemed, fallen Guyanese sportsman extraordinaire, Dr Ian McDonald

Kaieteur Sports – The President, Executive and members of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) have joined the rest of Guyana in celebrating the life of the late Dr Ian McDonald, one of Guyana’s distinguished sons in sports and the literary arts.

Dr McDonald, who was named Sportsman of the Year in 1957 jointly with another distinguished Guyanese, Athlete and Trade Unionist George DePeana, passed away in Canada, where he was residing.

His accomplishments in the sports arena are well-documented. Besides being a lifelong cricket lover, writer, and author, he also served as a member of the Committee on the Governance of West Indies Cricket in 2008, alongside members PJ Patterson and Alister McIntyre. Additionally, he played at Wimbledon in 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1959.

He captained Guyana for many years, including winning the Brandon Trophy in 1957, the same year he captured the Singles and Doubles championships.

Dr. McDonald was the West Indies Captain in the Davis Cup in the late 1950s and played competitively until 1985. He also served the sport administratively in the 1960s and 70s as Secretary of the British Lawn Tennis Association.

This distinguished son of the soil, born in Trinidad and Tobago, introduced Squash to Guyana along with Edgar Readwin at the Georgetown Club in the late 1960s and represented the Golden Arrowhead in the 1970s.

Dr. McDonald’s legacy in sport will continue to live on through one of his sons, Jamie McDonald, Owner and Manager of Fitness Express and Jamie’s daughter, national squash player Zoey McDonald, who just won the silver medal at the Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Championships held in the British Virgin Islands.
