Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty along with other members involved in the election fraud trial outside the Ashmin’s Building on Wednesday
Kaieteur News – Key witnesses in the 2020 elections fraud trial, during a visit the Ashmin’s building on Wednesday, explained the differences between the current structure and what they recalled back in March 2020.
The witnesses were part of a team that visited the site which was used as the command center of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) during the 2020 general and regional elections.
The visit was led by acting Chief Magistrate, Faith McGusty. Accompanying her was the legal team from both sides, along with witnesses; Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag, ANUG executive Kian Jabour, former Assistant Police Commissioner, Edgar Thomas, and election observer Rosalinda Rasul.
While retracing their steps, some of the witnesses noted that there was a glass door. They said the space looked different, as they all tried to recall where former returning officer Clairmont Mingo was when he was making the declaration. Measurements were also taken during the process.
Defense attorney Dr. Dexter Todd questioned the absence of any visual documentation and sole reliance on memory, since the layout appears to have been changed.
Jabour appeared uncertain when asked to identify Mingo’s position in the room, admitting that the time gap made it difficult to pinpoint exact locations with confidence.
The matter was adjourned for September 15, where both the defense and prosecution will make submissions. On that date, the court is expected to determine whether the trial into the 2020 elections case will proceed.
The case involves nine defendants who are facing 19 charges of conspiracy related to the March 2020 general and regional elections. The accused include former GECOM Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield; former Returning Officer for District Four Clairmont Mingo; former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers; former Minister Volda Lawrence; APNU+AFC’s Chief Scrutineer Carol Smith Joseph; and former GECOM employees Sheffern February, Enrique Liven, Michelle Miller, and Denise Babb-Cummings.
The charges allege that between March 2 and August 2, 2020, the accused conspired to manipulate the results of the 2020 elections at the Ashmins’ Building in Georgetown, defrauding the electors of Guyana.
