(Kaieteur News) – Another soldier stationed in Region Seven was shot while on border security duties in the Cuyuni River, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the GDF, the incident occurred around 12:03h after a patrol came under hostile fire from the Venezuelan shore. The patrol was reportedly escorting civilian vessels at the time of the shooting.
“The patrol responded in keeping with operational protocols and successfully ensured the safe passage of all civilians,” the GDF stated before adding, “One rank sustained injuries during the incident and was immediately administered first aid before being medically evacuated (MEDEVAC) to Georgetown for further treatment.”
The GDF disclosed that “The rank is currently in a stable condition, and his family members were informed.” The wounded soldier is the second one shot this month in a similar operation.
On May 5, around 11:30h Lance Corporal Douglas sustained two gunshots during an exchange of gunfire with armed men on the Venezuelan Shore while in the vicinity of Black Water, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
At the time he was among ranks on a GDF patrol boat escorting three civilian boats transporting personnel and cargo from Makapa to Eteringbang.
Kaieteur News understands that the shootings sometimes occur daily, making the Cuyuni River one of the most dangerous areas to traverse.
The dangers have prompted GDF patrol boats to escort Guyanese civilians who ply their trade in the area.
Friday’s shooting takes the number of soldiers injured by Venezuelan gunfire in the Cuyuni River to 10. In February 2025, eight soldiers were wounded after they were ambushed and shot at reportedly by a Venezuelan gang while on patrol duties.
