(Kaieteur News) – With the US$192M East Coast Road expansion project nearing completion, the Ministry of Public Works has shared that the section between Vryheid’s Lust to Orange Nassau is still to be fully paved.
The Ministry of Public Works in a statement on Thursday informed that the road expansion project is now almost 80 percent completed.

Sections of the East Coast of Demerara, Railway Embankment corridor where works have been completed.
Providing some break down of the works, the ministry reported that outstanding progress has been achieved across all critical structural and paving components.
“To date, 20.70 km of the targeted 38.50 km of asphalt paving has been successfully completed. Additionally, drainage and structural works are rapidly nearing the finish line, with 30 out of the 33 bridges and 71 out of 75 culverts now fully constructed, alongside the installation of 24.00km of box drains out of the required 25.30km,” the Public Works Ministry explained.
It was disclosed also that paving works from Sheriff Street to the Ogle roundabout are fully completed, as well as from Belfield to Orange Nassau. “Meanwhile, heavy paving operations remain actively ongoing within the corridor stretching from Vryheid’s Lust to Orange Nassau,” the ministry added.
During this final phase of development, the ministry further urged drivers to exercise caution, maintain safe speeds, and to strictly adhere to traffic signs while traversing the active construction areas along the East Coast corridor.
As reported previously, the expansion project includes the extension of the Railway Embankment Road into four lanes from Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau, extension of the main East Coast Roadway from Orange Nassau to Mahaica, as well as rehabilitation of the existing ECD road from Belfield to Orange Nassau, which will allow for additional lanes.
It was reported too that the governments of Guyana and China in December 2022 signed a Framework Concessional Loan Agreement to the tune of US$192 million to finance Phase II of the East Coast Road Project.
China Railway First Group Co. Limited secured the contract for the works following the national bidding process in 2022. The widening of the ECD highway began under the APNU+AFC government. The first phase started in 2017 and was completed in 2020 by the same contractor.
The East Coast corridor upgrade is aimed at easing traffic congestion and decreasing commute time.
