(Kaieteur News) – The $5.4 billion Kato Regional Hospital in Region Eight is scheduled for completion by October 2027, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Eight disclosed on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
The sod was turned for the hospital in November 2024.

According to the RDC, newly appointed Regional Executive Officer for Region Eight, Marti De Souza, Regional Chairperson Tarcellia John and Regional Health Officer, Dr. Talitha Cort visited the location of the new 57,000 square-foot Kato Regional Hospital that is being construction.
The regional officials met with the consultant and contractor and were briefed on the progress of the project. The project is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and is being constructed by the Sinophamintl Consortium.
“This hospital is the first of its kind in the region and is expected to be completed by October of 2027,” the RDC shared.

The Regional Administration shared that the Kato Hospital is designed to include a fully equipped operating theatre capable of performing cataract surgeries and C-sections. It will be outfitted with modern emergency rooms, a procedure room for minor surgeries, digital X-ray and portable X-ray services, CT scans, ultrasounds, laboratory services, and dialysis treatment. There will also be dedicated units for maternal, pediatric, and neonatal intensive care, among other facilities.
At the sod turning event, it was announced that the project is expected to be completed in 24 months (late 2026 or early 2027).
President Irfaan Ali in his remarks then said, “Health care is not a privilege; it is a fundamental right. The people of Kato and its neighbouring communities deserve nothing less than the best, and there are many on the Opposition benches who will question investments like this. They ask us, why are you spending so much money on an investment like this when the population is so small. We say to them that for us, regardless of the size, the people who live there or the location, they are entitled to the same quality of investment and development like anyone else on the coast or anywhere else.”
He disclosed that for decades, the Kato Cottage Hospital provided basic medical services that would have undoubtedly saved lives, but was limited in scope and capacity.
“With the construction of this modern hospital here in Kato, those days of limitations will be over,” the president told residents.
