Kaieteur Sports – With a wave of sexual assault and rape allegations surfacing against a prominent Guyanese and West Indies player, West Indies Head Coach Darren Sammy expressed his strong belief in justice being served, while stressing the need for due process to be carried out and respected.
It was the first time that Sammy has spoken publicly on the allegations, after being pressed by reporters in Grenada, where the Caribbean side is set to play the second Test against Australia tomorrow at the Island’s National Stadium.
“We’re all aware of what’s been going on in the media. I’m very close to my players. I’ve had conversations with them (the players) to make sure their mental space is good,” Sammy stated at yesterday’s press engagement in St George’s.
Kaieteur News has reported on several allegations against a particular West Indies player, with the Law Firm of Hughes, Fields and Stoby representing one alleged victim from a case dating back to 2023.
This newspaper has spoken to a number of women, all of whom shared sexual assault or rape allegations, mostly levelled against the celebrated player.
Some are seeking justice, others simply want to be heard, but all boldly stated that they are not interested in any form of compensation, especially financial.
“One thing I could say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served, however there is a process. As you say, there is allegations. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to make sure due process and the right system is followed,” Sammy pointed out.
According to the former West Indies captain turned coach, “As a cricketing board and me as head coach I want justice. My mum raised me well. As of now, it’s all allegations. We know the justice system. You have got to wait for things to process.”
Reporters highlighted to Sammy that one of the allegations involved the player being arrested and later released on bail.
Local authorities in Berbice had launched an active investigation, which reportedly ran into a dead-end.
“I’m not aware of that part of it. I didn’t go to school in data. I’m not a judge; I’m not a prosecutor. Just like you, the information that has come out is what we have. I’m pretty sure at the end of the day, justice will be served,” the West Indies coach stated.
Asked whether Cricket West Indies (CWI) had launched an internal investigation, Sammy responded, “I can’t answer that. I’m pretty sure they are doing what they can to make sure the right process is followed. We live in a world where today so many things come out. Allegations is just allegations until the process is complete.”
Regarding the player’s claim of innocence, Sammy firmly stated, “I can’t discuss that with you.”
Still, questions continue to swirl over the timing of the public release of these allegations, leaving the cricketing community deeply divided.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on CWI to see whether the player will take the field in tomorrow’s second Test.
His presence, or absence, will spark further interest in the allegations, especially as efforts in Guyana by one particular victim to seek justice have intensified.
