Kaieteur News- A 47-year-old vendor was fined $20,000 on Thursday when she appeared at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court to answer a careless driving charge.
Patrice Franklin of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) appeared before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce, who read the charge, which alleged that on April 23, 2025, at Non Pariel, ECD, she drove a motorcar in a careless manner.
Franklin pleaded guilty and told the court that she had an emergency at the hospital and was late, which prompted her to drive in a careless manner.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, Franklin was driving a motorcar, bearing registration number PTT 2166, west along the Non Pariel public road, while a truck was proceeding in the said direction in front of the defendant.
Franklin reportedly pulled north and overtook the truck on the solid double yellow lines, causing vehicles proceeding east in another driving lane to pull further north to avoid a collision.
She was subsequently pulled over by Corporal Smith, who informed her of the offence committed. She was then arrested and later charged.
Franklin told the court that she had been driving for 19 years and this was her first infraction.
“I am sorry, and it won’t happen again. I never had no difficulties with police before,” the woman said.
Magistrate Scarce considered Franklin’s plea and fined her.
