…43% road deaths this year involved motorcycles
Kaieteur News- Two motorcyclists were killed in separate accidents within two hours on Monday evening, bringing into sharp focus recent warnings issued by President Irfaan Ali, who, just days earlier, had called for increased caution among road users, particularly motorcyclists.
The first fatal crash claimed the life of 39-year-old Markind Jackson of Silver Hill Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway. Jackson was riding along the Moblissa Public Road when a speeding minibus, driven by 54-year-old Maurice Meredith, lost control and veered into his lane.
The minibus collided head-on with Jackson’s motorcycle, violently hurling him into a parked motorcar (registration PXX 3747) on the western side of the road. Jackson was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The minibus driver, Meredith, was also injured and remains hospitalised under police guard as the investigation continues.
Less than two hours later, at approximately 23:50 hrs, 19-year-old Ricardo Melville of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, died in another motorcycle crash, this time, along the Diamond Public Road.
According to police reports, Melville was riding motorcycle CL 4491 at a high speed, heading south along the eastern carriageway, when he lost control and collided with a concrete culvert located on the roadside.
Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) responded and transported the teen, who was found unconscious, to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. His body was later taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The tragedy has shattered the Melville family once again. A relative told Kaieteur News that Ricardo’s older brother died in a similar motorcycle accident six years ago, and the family had also lost their mother in 2024.
These back-to-back accidents tragically echo the warning issued by Ali just five days earlier, on April 16.
In a Facebook post, the president disclosed that 43 per cent of road fatalities in 2025 so far have involved motorcyclists, with 72 per cent of those victims not wearing helmets.
“I am appealing to all road users, especially motorcyclists, to exercise extreme caution on our roadways,” Ali stated.
The president’s post was made moments following the tragic death of a motorcyclist in an accident involving a truck on Mandela Avenue.
Further, less than 24 hours prior, two other motorcyclists were injured in separate accidents, neither of whom was wearing a safety helmet.
Despite efforts by the government to curb road fatalities through the implementation of the e-ticketing system and speed monitoring meters, motorcyclists’ deaths remain high. The government has also signalled its intention to amend aspects of Guyana’s traffic laws to address the issue more effectively.
