New Doctor’s Clinic cricket team donates hampers to Fort Island residents
Kaieteur Sports – The New Doctor’s Clinic cricket team recently donated hampers to residents of Fort Island in the Essequibo River. As part of their corporate responsibility, members of the entity journeyed to the historic island on Sunday last and distributed the hampers to residents who welcomed the initiative.
Chief Executive Officer of New Doctor’s Clinic and manager of the team Satyendra Khemraj said he is delighted to render assistance to residents of the riverain community and will continue to make meaningful contributions to the island.
Khemraj, who grew up on the island, urged the residents to get involved in sports, moreso the children and briefly reminded about the rich history there.

A number of residents expressed their pleasure and thanked Khemraj for the gesture. One resident said that Khemraj has always been generous to them as he is always quick to respond when called upon.
Another resident stated that while the island is usually a peaceful place, they stressed the need for a police outpost or neighbourhood policing group there. The resident said that in cases of emergency, they usually have to wait for quite some time before members of the disciplined forces arrive and this can be too late depends on the situation.

Fort Island is located in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara region of Guyana. It is about 16 kilometres from the mouth of the river, and to the east of Hogg Island which is the largest island in the Essequibo river.
In 1687, a wooden fort was built on the island and in 1744 Fort Zeelandia was constructed and served as the capital of Essequibo. In 1752, the Court of Policy was built on the island as the legislative body.
