Basketball, Football Federations praise $4.3B allocation for Sports in National Budget
Kaieteur News – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) are hailing the allocation of $4.3B for sports in the country’s proposed $781.9B National Budget, as a monumental step towards the sustainability and development of their respective disciplines.
The 2023 National Budget, as presented by Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister with responsibilities for Finance under the Office of the President, has seen more than a 33% increase in funds being allocated for the development of sports in Guyana with $4.3B this year as opposed to the $3.2B in 2022.

The sport of basketball will benefit directly through the National Basketball Academy and the rehabilitation of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Guyana’s premiere indoor facility.
According to a release from the GABF, the improvement to the CASH will now enable Guyana to bid for the hosting rights for both International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup and AmeriCup Qualifiers, which will give the country Guyana and the GABF opportunities to earn revenue through sports tourism and event ticket sales, along with giving national team players the opportunity to represent Guyana at home in a modernize sports facility.
The GABF believes that with basketball being classified as one of the twelve core sports by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. and the National Sports Commission (NSC) demonstrates the Ministry’s seriousness in partnering with the GABF to develop, grow and promote basketball and 3×3 basketball in Guyana.
The GABF have benefited via the implementation of the National Basketball Academy and funding for their senior and junior national basketball and 3×3 basketball teams during 2022.
In 2023, the Guyana senior and junior national teams will have the opportunity to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 Caribbean Qualifiers, the FIBA Women’s Centrobasket Championship and the FIBA Centrobasket Qualifiers for U15 and U17 Boys and Girls.
The Guyana senior men’s national team won the last FIBA AmeriCup Caribbean Qualifiers in 2018 in Suriname.

Meanwhile, Wayne Forde, president of the GFF, said the local Government for the ‘Beautiful Game’, stands to salute “the bold leadership of the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and his Government’s unprecedented and consistent investment in the development of Sports and the Young Men and Women of this country.”
Forde further added, “It is very heartening to see Hon. Minister Charles Ramson being recognized and rewarded for his outstanding work, which he has undertaken at a breath-taking pace over the past two years. It is therefore entirely fitting that he is granted the resources to fulfil his transformational vision for the growth and development of Culture, Youth and Sports.”
The GFF, Forde said, is committed to doing their part in the actualization of the Nation’s dreams and aspirations for Sports development.
