Team Guyana out of singles competition Edghill and Britton set for mixed doubles tomorrow

Kaieteur News – Yesterday, Chelsea Edghill, Guyana’s highest ranked Table Tennis player, earned Team Guyana’s first victory in the Latin American Singles and Mixed Doubles Qualifying tourney for the Tokyo Olympics.
However, during her second round matchup against Mabelyn Enriquez of Guatemala, the resilient athlete fell 4-2 after six battling sets. Earlier in the qualifiers which are being contested in Rosario, Argentina, Edghill won her second first-round game in the Women’s Singles; prevailing 4-1 against Leyla Gomez of Paraguay.
Edghill, who is on a sports scholarship in Portugal, won the first three sets 11-8 11-6 17-15, before Gomez won the fourth 11-7. She then finished off the match by winning the fifth set 11-5.
The victory secured Edghill’s passage to the second round later in the day (yesterday) against Enriquez who eventually defeated the Guyanese.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s national champion Natalie Cummings lost a hard-fought women’s game against Nathaly Paredes of Ecuador 4-2. Paredes took the first two sets 13-11 11-9 while Cummings won the third 11-8. Paredes extended her lead with an 11-5 win before Cummings won the fifth 11-9. Paredes then sealed the win with an 11-6 scoreline.
On the men’s side, Shemar Britton and Joel Alleyne also lost their second and final first-round matches. Britton lost 4-2 to Alexander Echavarria of Colombia while Alleyne suffered a 4-1 defeat to Cecilio Correa of Venezuela.
Britton won the second and fifth sets 11-3 11-8 while Echavarria won the others 11-5 11-9 11-6 11-4 while Alleyne went down to Correa 11-7 11-5 9-11 11-4 11-3. Britton and Edghill will now turn their focus towards the mixed doubles which serves off tomorrow.
Earlier yesterday, Edghill had shared with Kaieteur Sport that she feels good physically and tactically and she is working on honing her mental aspect of her game.
