Balram Narine beats top class field to win Beyoncé Ross Memorial cycle road race

All the top riders in Berbice and who are also among the best in the country at the moment were present. But the up and coming Balram Narine of the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) showed that he is a force to be reckoned with as he withstood all that was thrown at him to ride away with the Beyoncé Ross Memorial Cycling road race held on Sunday in Berbice.

The 40-mile event, which was for Berbicians only, was held from Rose Hall Town to Number 51 Village and back for the finish in front of the ‘Sha Veh’ Business Complex at Port Mourant.
The race was very competitive with Narine holding off a driving finish from the big guns in the chasing pack to win in one hour, 58 minutes and 58 seconds.
The battle was intense throughout with the likes of top riders Narine, Romello Crawford, Curtis “Chappy” Dey, Andrew Hicks, Andre ‘Padlock’ Green, Ajay Gopilall, and Ralph Sewnarine battling for supremacy.
Some five miles during the return journey Narine and Gopilall broke away. The chasing pack not letting up caught Gopilall with about 50 meters to go. Narine however had enough in his tank to stave off the challengers for the victory.

Crawford who had a flat tire during the race was subsequently disqualified for some infringements during the event.
Dey was elevated to second, Hicks third with Gopilall riding in fourth and Green fifth.
Jeremiah Joseph turned the tables on arch rival and FACC team mate Mario Washington in the Juvenile category with the probing Steve Bhimsen in third position.
The Veterans category saw Syborne Fernandes in winner’s row. The sprint prizes saw Narine, Crawford and Gopilall taking two each.
Trophies and incentives were donated by A. Ally’s and Sons, Peter Lewis General Construction, The Regional Democratic Council, The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club among others.
The presentation ceremony was held at the Area ‘H’ Ground in Rose Hall Town, where the family held a day of sports. A moment of silence was observed before the race. Ross, who hailed from Rose Hall Town, won three gold medals at the National Schools’ Cycling Championships in 2017. She died a year ago from brain tumor.
Ross’ family is in the process of setting up a foundation to assist others who might encounter similar circumstances. The day of sports was held to observe her passing and raise funds to help propel the foundation. (Samuel Whyte)
